There's something about sport that always gets the heart racing. Whether it's the unpredictability of the outcomes or the drama that occurs both on and off the field, sport always throws up amazing and often inspirational stories.

That's why sports documentaries exist, and we thought we'd put together a little list of must-see sports docos, that not only will entertain you but will provide inspiration for your weight loss journey.

Welcome To Wrexham

This documentary follows the exploits of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they purchase a struggling soccer team in Wales and attempt to drag it from the fifth tier of English football towards the top of the pyramid. Not only is this an invaluable insight into the inner workings of a historic Welsh club, but also the significant impact the club’s fortunes have on the tight-knit community. This is a truly inspirational television show that will make you want to go out and defy the odds.

The Test

Go behind the scenes of the Australian men's cricket team as they lurch from tears to triumph and back again in this compelling documentary. The first season starts in 2018, following the infamous ball-tampering scandal in South Africa and follows the newly appointed captain and coach combination of Tim Paine and Justin Langer as they attempt to rebuild the team’s reputation. Subsequent seasons deal with the fallout as the two men lose their jobs while Australia hunts for Ashes glory. Full of valuable lessons on sportsmanship, humility, redemption and overcoming adversity, The Test doesn’t just provide valuable insights into the game of cricket, but also the ebb and flow of life itself.

Beckham

If you’ve never heard about David Beckham, chances are you’re living beneath an especially large rock. That said, if you’re keen to learn more about the English soccer maestro turned fashion icon, this is your first port of call. Not only does ‘Golden Balls’ have a compelling story to tell, but there are a couple of takeaways for audiences looking for some inspiration, too. Beckham’s dedication to honing his craft as a player will serve as a valuable lesson to everyone, as will his ability to bounce back after being crucified by the English press following an on-field indiscretion during the 1998 World Cup.

Drive To Survive

As it turns out, there’s more to Formula 1 than a bunch of rich blokes building cars and hiring young men to whizz around racetracks. As this Netflix documentary reveals, there’s a tonne of strategy, a stack of varied personalities and several diverse and inspiring stories in the world of F1. Check this out tonight — you won’t be disappointed.

The Playbook

This Netflix series from 2020 looks at the lives and experiences of some of the world’s most prominent sports coaches including Doc Rivers, José Mourinho and Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Like all good sporting documentaries, not only does this provide a great behind-the-scenes look at these coaches and their lives, but it also provides insights into their coaching philosophies and the techniques they use to motivate their athletes, which you could adapt for yourself.
